Most lounge furniture answers a sustainability questionnaire with a certificate. Aom answers it with a construction. The collection is built from two components that interlock — an expanded polypropylene structure and padding in Breathair, a recyclable elastomeric polyester — and a quilted cover holds them together without a single staple or a drop of glue.

Two things follow, and both belong in a submittal. There is no polyurethane in the collection at all, which Arper describes as uncommon in the furniture sector. And the piece comes apart completely at end of life, with the manufacturer putting recyclability at up to approximately 100 per cent. That is a materials argument rather than a marketing one, and it survives a procurement review.

The same build lets it work outdoors: drainage is integrated into the structure, the padding breathes, and the piece dries quickly after water. Six codes, three lounge and three outdoor. Metropolis Likes recognised it in the United States in 2026, alongside a Clerkenwell Design Week award in the UK. Jean-Marie Massaud designed it for contract, hospitality and education. La Mercanti specifies Aom for US floors with samples and the full material list settled before the order.

FAQ

What goes in the sustainability section of a submittal?
Three lines from the manufacturer: no polyurethane in the collection, mechanical assembly with no staples or glue, and complete disassembly with recyclability up to approximately 100 per cent. Those are construction facts, which is what survives a procurement review.
What replaces foam in the seat?
Breathair, a recyclable elastomeric polyester that is elastic, breathable and water resistant. Paired with the expanded polypropylene structure it removes polyurethane from the collection entirely, a combination Arper calls uncommon in the furniture sector.
Can the same piece be specified for a rooftop?
Three of the six codes are the outdoor versions. Drainage is integrated into the structure and the padding breathes, so the piece dries quickly after rain. Confirm the intended position against the manufacturer's documentation before the order.
How does maintenance work in a high-traffic lounge?
The quilted cover comes off and goes back on. Because the assembly is mechanical, cleaning stays with the facilities team rather than becoming an upholstery job, and the same feature is what allows full disassembly later.
Are dimensions published?
No. Neither dimensions nor weights appear on the product page, so they have to be requested from the manufacturer. For a furniture plan it is worth getting them at schematic design, which La Mercanti handles.

Specifying lounge furniture that clears a sustainability review

Five lines that make a soft-seating spec verifiable instead of decorative.

Ask what the padding is
Foam or not foam. In Aom the answer is Breathair, a recyclable elastomeric polyester, and it is the single line that changes both the comfort story and the environmental one.
Count the components
Two. Fewer parts means fewer joints, no adhesives, and a repair that stays a repair rather than becoming a replacement order.
Check what holds it together
A quilted cover instead of staples. What opens can be cleaned; what can be cleaned stays in service long enough to matter.
Follow the water before you place it
Integrated drainage and breathable padding. Without both, an outdoor sofa is an indoor sofa with a warranty conversation ahead of it.
Put end of life in the same paragraph
Complete disassembly and recyclability up to approximately 100 per cent are manufacturer statements. In a review with circularity criteria they carry more weight than any finish board.
