Few tile collections come with this faculty list. Rossana Hu chairs the Department of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania's Weitzman School; Lyndon Neri, an honorary FAIA, has taught at Princeton — and together, as Neri&Hu of Shanghai, they lecture from Harvard GSD to Yale. When American firms specify Weaving, they are specifying the design thinking that U.S. architecture schools already teach.

The collection abstracts the ancient Chinese art of bamboo weaving into three interlocking porcelain patterns — San Jiao (triangle), Si Fang (square), Ba Leng (octagon) — mounted on mesh like a true mosaic. The tesserae are unglazed full-body porcelain, individually pressed; five natural matt tones plus a two-color mix per pattern follow bamboo through its stages of maturation. The numbers travel well across a U.S. project: 0.1% absorption, frost-proof, DCOF 0.64, stain class 5, Mohs 7, Robinson-rated for heavy-duty use — floor and wall, indoors and out, with Mutina's Registered Community Design on the drawing.

FAQ

Who are Neri & Hu, in terms an American client recognizes?
Founding partners of Neri&Hu Design and Research Office in Shanghai — and two of the most academically decorated designers working today: Rossana Hu chairs the architecture department at Penn's Weitzman School of Design, Lyndon Neri is an honorary FAIA and has taught at Princeton, and the pair have lectured at Harvard GSD, Yale and Berkeley. Weaving is their ceramic system for Mutina.
Does Weaving meet U.S. slip guidance for commercial floors?
The declared dynamic coefficient of friction is 0.64 per ANSI A326.3 — comfortably above the 0.42 threshold the standard references for level interior walkways — alongside R10, barefoot class B and a pendulum value of 50 dry / 40 wet. As always, verify against the specific project's requirements on the manufacturer's documentation.
Can Weaving run from an interior lobby to an exterior patio?
Yes — the declared use is floor and wall, indoor and outdoor, on a single unglazed full-body porcelain: 0.1% absorption, frost-proof, thermal-shock resistant, deep abrasion 123 mm³ and a Robinson rating for heavy-duty, high-impact use. One material can therefore carry a hospitality space across its threshold.
How does the mesh-mounted format affect installation cost and quality?
It moves the precision from the jobsite to the factory: tesserae arrive pre-spaced on mesh, and the crew lays sheets keeping the same 4 mm joint that runs inside them. A porcelain adhesive and either cement or epoxy grout complete the job; for San Jiao and Ba Leng a starting piece, available on request, sets the first row true.
Is the Weaving pattern protected design?
Yes — Mutina states that the Weaving collection design is a Registered Community Design of Ceramiche Mutina. Combined with production details that resist imitation — individually pressed tesserae, hand extraction, full-body color — the pattern a firm specifies is the pattern the client keeps.

From lobby to patio: planning one Weaving spec

Five steps to carry Neri&Hu's woven mosaic through an American commercial project — patterns, data, sheets and grout.

Anchor the spec in the data
List the numbers that matter up front: DCOF 0.64, absorption 0.1%, frost-proof, stain class 5, Robinson heavy-duty. With those on the sheet, the same material can be drawn indoors and out without a substitution clause sneaking in.
Assign patterns to zones
Use Ba Leng where the space should breathe — lobbies, feature walls — San Jiao where detail rewards a closer look, Si Fang for calm circulation areas. Same body, same data: zoning by pattern costs nothing technically.
Order sheets, starters and overage together
Boxes cover roughly half a square meter each — Si Fang 0.502, San Jiao 0.517, Ba Leng 0.498 — with 42 boxes per pallet. Add the starting piece for San Jiao and Ba Leng, and cutting overage at perimeters and penetrations.
Protect the joint discipline
Write the 4 mm joint into the spec: sheets are laid continuing the spacing inside the mesh, and that spacing is the design. Porcelain adhesive below, cement or epoxy grout above, each cleaned by its declared method.
Close out with documents
VOC emissions, Declaration of Contents, SDS, BPD3 and HPD are available from Mutina on request, and certificates download directly from the product page — a tidy package for the project binder.
