The open plan solved collaboration and created a new problem: nowhere to put your eyes. Celosia answers with architecture instead of furniture — a hand-extruded terracotta block, 8″×10″×4″, that stacks into screens up to 13 feet tall and filters sightlines while light and air keep moving. Reception gains a threshold, the meeting corner gains privacy, and the floor plate never goes dark.

Patricia Urquiola designed it in 2018 for Mutina by deconstructing the terracotta tradition — roof tiles, bricks, lattice screens — into one three-dimensional element whose triangular voids recall Roman numerals. It installs as a system: staggered courses only, anchoring schemes tested and certified by Istituto Giordano, painted willow profiles, and a dedicated silane sealant developed by Kerakoll exclusively for Mutina, rated EC 1 plus. The VOC declaration records zero volatile organic compounds; recycled content is 10% under LEED 4.1.

Since 2025, Celosia Outdoor in the Argilla shade extends the same drawing to patios and roof decks, with an F2 severe-exposure frost rating. Technical sheet and certificates can be downloaded from this page.

FAQ

How much privacy does an openwork screen really provide?
The useful kind: seen frontally, the triangular fins close the view; light, air and presence still pass. It separates reception from workspace or lounge from boardroom without the real-estate cost of a wall — and without pretending to be an acoustic barrier, which it is not.
Is this a masonry job or a millwork job?
Neither in the usual sense: courses are laid staggered — the only permitted pattern, for safety — bonded with a dedicated silane sealant made by Kerakoll exclusively for Mutina, framed by painted willow profiles, and anchored per schemes tested and certified by Istituto Giordano.
What is the maximum height and span?
Thirteen feet high with two-sided anchoring; up to roughly 13×10 feet with three-sided anchoring; free-standing pieces up to about 8×3 feet. Specified fixings are Fisher SXR 8×80, with structural verification following local building codes.
Can it live outside, through real winters?
Since 2025, yes: Celosia Outdoor in the Argilla shade carries an F2 severe-exposure frost rating per UNI EN 772-22 — and its willow profiles are finished for exterior use. Same drawing, patio-proof.
What sustainability documentation ships with it?
Hard paper: 10% recycled content certified under LEED 4.1, a VOC declaration recording zero volatile organic compounds, an EC 1 plus rated sealant, plus SDS, BPD3 and HPD available on request. Samples can be ordered, their cost fully credited at order confirmation.

Zoning an open plan with terracotta, not drywall

Five steps to give the floor plate thresholds and privacy while keeping every foot of daylight.

Map the sightlines
Walk the plan and note where eyes travel uninvited — entry to desks, lounge to boardroom. Those lines, not the walls, are what Celosia is for.
Size against the tested schemes
Two-sided anchoring reaches 13 feet of height; three-sided spans about 13×10. Bring your engineer in early — the schemes are certified, the sign-off is local.
Buy the system, not the block
Blocks, willow profiles, Mutina sealant: one kit, including the removable-side top profile that closes cleanly against the ceiling.
Keep the courses staggered
It is the mandatory pattern for safety and the reason the triangles read like a script. The producer's installation video covers the sequence.
Hold a block before you commit
Twelve pounds of extruded terracotta with a declared ±3 mm tolerance says more than a render; sample costs are fully credited when the order is confirmed.
