Trade terms for professionals and design studios

American specifiers usually choose between slip data and design joy. Din refuses the trade: its matt finish declares DCOF 0.77 — nearly double the 0.42 threshold — plus R11 and DIN 51097 class C on the mesh formats, R10 on the larger sizes, Pendulum 53 dry/38 wet. That is amenity-floor, pool-deck-grade traction, delivered in eight colours from Rose to Dark Green with a hand-mottled glaze. Safety sheets rarely look this good.

The system behind the colour is Konstantin Grcic at his most rational (2021, EDIDA 2022; two Compasso d'Oro, MoMA permanent collection): a 15×15 cm square halved into four modular sizes locking on a constant 2 mm joint — 8 colours × 2 finishes = 64 elements, «from very basic to highly sophisticated». Glazed pressed ceramic, 9 mm, frost-proof, stain class 5. And it goes 3D: six special pieces — cubes and bars in every colour — wrap corners, vanities, tubs and shelves into coherent ceramic objects.

Where the grip pays

Floor and wall, indoor and outdoor: washrooms and wet rooms, wellness floors, break areas, roof terraces — matt underfoot, glossy on walls and dry zones. Datasheet and certificates on this page.

FAQ

How unusual is DCOF 0.77 really?
Very: US practice treats 0.42 as the wet-traction threshold for level interior floors, and most design-led glazed tiles clear it modestly. Din's matt finish declares 0.77 - with corroborating numbers from other methods: R10-R11 ratings, DIN 51097 up to class C on mesh formats, Pendulum 53 dry/38 wet. That covers wet rooms, shower floors, amenity and pool-adjacent decks with margin, in colors most safety-rated products never attempt. One honest boundary: the values are declared for matt only - glossy goes on walls.
What does the mesh format add for commercial wet areas?
The two smallest sizes (3×3 and 1.5×3 in) ship pre-mounted on 12×12 mesh, which does three jobs: it climbs to the highest declared traction (R11, barefoot class C), it follows falls and drains with small-module flexibility, and it installs fast with the joint spacing already set - the datasheet asks only that you keep the same 2 mm joint between sheets. Shower floors, spa circulation and locker rooms are exactly its habitat.
Can the system handle branding and wayfinding programs?
That is what 64 standardized elements are for: eight colors - two blues, two greens, rose, red, black, white - in two finishes and four interlocking sizes let you code floors by department, mark circulation in accent bands, or match a brand palette without custom production. Grcic's halving logic means every mix resolves on the same 2 mm grid. The mottled artisanal glaze keeps large fields alive; the EDIDA 2022 award keeps the design pedigree citable.
How do the 3D pieces work for vanities and tubs?
Six artisanal pieces - cubes, corner sections and 15 cm bars in every color and finish - wrap built volumes so the tub surround, vanity or reception desk reads as one ceramic object with the wall. Two rules from the sheet, since the product is non-rectified: verify real calibres of delivered pieces before fabricating substrates, and dry-lay the composition first. Coordinate millwork and tile trades early; the payoff is joinery that matches the finish schedule exactly.
What documentation exists - and what is deliberately not claimed?
Declared and documented: stain class 5, chemical class A, frost-proof (indoor-outdoor rating), the full matt slip package, VOC- and SVHC-free body, with EPD, HPD and Red List Building Materials available through La Mercanti for submittals. Deliberately not claimed: no recycled-content percentage is published for this collection, so none is asserted. Maintenance is neutral-detergent simple; fine-grain grout is mandatory on glossy. Sample costs are fully credited at order confirmation.

Safety in eight colors: Din in five steps

Five moves for US architects and workplace teams: Grcic's modular system from wet rooms to roof decks - traction data first, joy included.

Put the numbers in the spec
DCOF 0.77 matt, R11/class C on mesh, Pendulum 53/38: copy the declared values into wet-area specs instead of hunting equivalents.
Mesh where it is wet
12×12 mesh formats for showers, spa floors and falls; 6×6 and 3×6 matt for general floors; glossy strictly on walls and dry zones.
Code with color
Eight colors × four sizes = wayfinding, department coding or brand palettes on one 2 mm grid - no custom production needed.
Wrap the casework
Cubes and bars clad tubs, vanities and desks in the finish schedule's own colors: check real calibres before fabrication, dry-lay first.
Order by the box
0.72 sqm (7.75 sq ft) per box across all formats: La Mercanti converts drawings to boxes with wastage and coordinates freight.
