American juries met Déchirer early and kept giving it prizes: Best of NeoCon 2009 in Chicago, ICFF Editors Award for Material 2011 in New York, Good Design 2010 — three of its six international awards came from the US circuit. The spec sheet returns the courtesy with ASTM values declared alongside ISO: absorption 0.06% to both C373 and ISO 10545/3, thermal shock and frost to C484 and C1026, chemicals to C650. A European icon written in American, ready for US submittals.

What the juries rewarded still stands: Patricia Urquiola's first Mutina collection (2008), an unglazed full-body porcelain with the matte chromatics of concrete — her material love, kept ceramic — and a walkable bas-relief, «elegantly skid-resistant» (R10 both textures, DIN 51097 B, Pendulum Class 1). Colour runs through all 12 mm — Mohs 8, 61.2 N/mm² breaking strength — made on the Continua line in rectified single-calibre slabs. Five colours, the cement-toned La Suite, a recycled-glass wall mosaic, and the oversize 120×120 hexagon.

Where it performs

Fifteen years of juries later, the working range is unchanged: floor and wall, indoor and outdoor, frost-proof — lobbies, boardrooms, washrooms, amenity floors, roof terraces. Step, corner and skirting pieces close the detail. Datasheet and certificates on this page.

FAQ

Why do the American awards matter when specifying today?
Because they were judged on the two things US commercial projects still buy: innovation and performance. Best of NeoCon 2009 is the contract-interiors benchmark, the ICFF Editors Award 2011 recognized the material itself, Good Design 2010 confirmed the industrial merit. Fifteen years on, the collection is still in production unchanged - which turns those juries into due diligence you did not have to pay for. The award list is printed in the datasheet, citable in any submittal.
Does the documentation actually work for US specifications?
Unusually well: the technical sheet declares ASTM values alongside ISO - absorption 0.06% to ASTM C373, thermal shock to C484, frost to C1026, chemical resistance to C650 - plus a LEED 4.1 declaration of 20% pre-consumer recycled content and EPD/HPD available on request through La Mercanti. Slip is declared as R10 both textures, DIN 51097 B and Pendulum Class 1; note DCOF is not among the declared values, so specify on the published classes or request project testing.
What makes full-body porcelain the right call for high-traffic US interiors?
No glaze to wear through: the color is the body, all 12 mm of it, so elevator lobbies, corridor desire-lines and years of janitorial cycles cannot expose an undercoat. Mohs 8 hardness, 61.2 N/mm² breaking strength, deep-abrasion compliance and 0.06% absorption make the case in numbers. And because the surface is matte body, not gloss coating, it weathers scratches the way concrete does - by not showing them.
How versatile is the format system for large floorplates?
From gesture to grain: 47×47 slabs (15.5 sq ft each) and 24×47 run big open floors with minimal joints; the oversize 47-inch hexagon makes the lobby statement Urquiola intended - concrete-like, almost out-of-format; 24×24 and the random mosaic handle transitions; step, corner and skirting pieces detail stairs and edges. La Suite's Calce, Cemento and Cenere extend the palette to pure cement tones. One system, one maintenance regime, indoors to roof terrace.
What are the installation and care rules?
Datasheet says: porcelain adhesive, 2 mm joints with spacer wedges, draw from several boxes, and double-buttering under the 120×120 slabs - write them into the spec so they get priced. Grouts are recommended per color, tone on tone, completing the cast-concrete read. Care is neutral detergent diluted in water - no acids, alkalis, waxes or sealers - with end-of-site protocols printed in the sheet. Samples through La Mercanti, cost fully credited at order confirmation.

Specifying a design-award veteran: Déchirer in five steps

Five moves for US architects and workplace teams: Urquiola's concrete-souled porcelain from lobby to roof terrace - with the paperwork America asks for.

Lead with the pedigree
Best of NeoCon, ICFF, Good Design and four registered designs go straight into the submittal: originality with citations.
Scale the formats to the plate
47×47 and 24×47 for open floors, the 47-inch hexagon for the lobby gesture, mosaic and 24×24 for transitions - one language throughout.
Use the ASTM columns
Absorption C373, frost C1026, chemicals C650 are pre-declared: copy them into the spec instead of requesting equivalents.
Detail with the family
Step, corner and skirting pieces plus color-matched grouts close stairs and edges without leaving the collection.
Plan boxes and freight
15.5 sq ft per 120 slab, 3-piece boxes in 24×24, trims by the foot: La Mercanti converts drawings to crates and coordinates delivery with your GC.
