American workplaces have learned that perfectly uniform surfaces read as perfectly forgettable. Chymia fixes that with a mechanism, not a mood: the slight differences between tiles of the same pattern are declared intentional in the datasheet, and the four Mixes ship with six different items shuffled in every box. Variation is not an accident to apologize for - it is the product, engineered by Milanese studio Laboratorio Avallone with artist Gennaro Avallone's black-and-white marks: brushwork, drops, weaves, imprints.

Under the art, working porcelain: rectified glazed stoneware, 30×30 cm (12×12 in), 10 mm, absorption 0.06%, stain class 5, frost-proof, Robinson heavy use - and a registered design (no. 007510870, 2020) protecting the graphics. Eleven textures plus four Mixes, all in White and Black; slip rated per finish - Flat R9/A, textured R10/B, DCOF over 0.59, well past the 0.42 threshold. Recycled content 20% declared for LEED 4.1, zero-VOC production, 50-year expected service life.

Where it works

The datasheet draws the perimeter wide — floor and wall, indoor and outdoor: lobby and amenity floors, washrooms, break areas, roof terraces. Skirting 3.8×30 closes the detail. Datasheet and certificates download from this page.

FAQ

How does the in-box shuffle actually work on site?
Each Mix box arrives with six different items already shuffled - twelve tiles, 1.08 sqm - so the installer lays variation without curating it tile by tile. The datasheet adds the governing rule: draw material alternately from several boxes so tones balance across the floor. The crew gets speed, the floor gets randomness that was designed upstream by Avallone rather than improvised downstream. Ask La Mercanti for the laying scheme if you want the chaos art-directed.
Is the variation a QC risk on large orders?
No - it is the declared behavior of the product, not batch drift: the datasheet states the slight pattern differences between pieces are intentional, for a never-repetitive lay. What stays constant is the engineering: 0.06% absorption, stain class 5, class A chemical resistance, frost-proof, on every tile. You are specifying controlled variation on an industrial baseline - the opposite of hoping a printed pattern repeats convincingly.
What are the slip numbers for real traffic?
Per finish, as they should be: Flat rates R9 and DIN 51097 class A - walls and dry zones - while the textured surfaces rate R10 and class B, with DCOF above 0.59 against the 0.42 code threshold and Pendulum values declared (Flat 56 dry/42 wet). Add Robinson heavy use and frost resistance and the range covers lobby floors, amenity washrooms and roof terraces with data, not adjectives. Wet barefoot spa zones: run the declared classes past your designer.
Does black-and-white limit the interior palette?
It liberates it: B&W is the one graphic system that cannot clash with a brand color, a wood tone or next year's furniture refresh. Mutina's own pairing with the Accents paint collection shows the mechanism - the floor keeps the graphics, walls take any color. Dose it: Flat fields for calm, gestural textures (Drops, Bloom, Impronta) for accents, Mixes where the floor should carry the room. The registered design (no. 007510870) keeps the artwork yours.
What supports sustainability scoring on a US project?
The LEED 4.1 declaration states 20% recycled content in the body; the catalogue documents a production process with zero VOC emissions, a 50-year expected service life and fully recyclable packaging. EPD and HPD come through La Mercanti on request for submittal packages. Maintenance stays cheap and green: neutral detergent only - no waxes, sealants or acid regimes. Sample costs are fully credited at order confirmation.

Designing controlled randomness: Chymia in five steps

Five moves for US architects and workplace teams: Avallone's shuffled black-and-white porcelain from lobby to roof terrace.

Zone the energy
Decide where variation carries the room (lobby, break, feature washroom) and where Flat fields calm it - floor and wall, indoor and outdoor.
Pick textures like typography
Flat is the whitespace; Rigo and Juta the texture; Drops, Bloom, Impronta the display type; Mixes the collage. Sample several tiles - variation is the spec.
Engineer the slip per zone
Flat R9/A dry and vertical; textured R10/B with DCOF 0.59+ for working floors and terraces. Frost-proof takes it outside.
Brief the shuffle
Mixes come pre-shuffled; still draw from multiple boxes across the field. Get the laying scheme from La Mercanti so randomness lands composed.
Count the boxes
9 pieces per box (0.81 sqm), Mix 12 (1.08 sqm), skirting by the meter: La Mercanti converts the drawing into boxes with wastage and coordinates freight.
