Everyone in a specification meeting has an opinion about upholstery. Kastel publishes numbers instead: 300,000 Martindale cycles for the Skill/Secret and Valencia surfaces, 150,000 for the Extrema faux leathers, 100,000 for the recycled and wool fabrics, 70,000 for Trevi. Same Kriteria executive chair underneath — the difference is what you put on it, and how many hands and sleeves it will meet.

Under every one of them sits the same construction: curved beech shells in non-deforming polyurethane, arms upholstered into the seat, three backrests from meeting height to executive height, and a dozen bases from black nylon to polished aluminium. The declared standard is EN 1335 type C, tested to the edition in force at the time of testing.

La Mercanti supplies Kriteria to projects across the United States: send us the traffic and the finish level, and configurations come back confirmed in writing by the factory.

FAQ

How high do the abrasion ratings go?
Up to 300,000 Martindale cycles on the Skill/Secret and Valencia surfaces; the Extrema faux leathers are rated 150,000, most recycled and wool fabrics 100,000.
Which covering carries the fire homologation?
Class 1IM is available on request only, with the Trevi cat. C fabric. Other collections list their own fire references, including EN 1021 and BS 5852.
Are there low-emission or certified surfaces?
Valencia declares Greenguard Gold and Carbon Neutral; several fabrics carry OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and the EU Ecolabel; the leather declares Biobased product, Carbon Neutral and Blue Angel.
What is the seat built from?
Curved beech plywood shells padded in non-deforming expanded polyurethane, with a steel blade joining seat and backrest.
Are there wipe-clean options for shared desks?
Yes — the Extrema faux leathers declare an antimicrobial treatment and water resistance, and Valencia adds an anti-stain finish with UV resistance.

How to match the covering to the traffic it will see

Abrasion, cleaning and fire are three different questions. Five steps to answer them in order.

Count the hours, not the room
A shared desk sees more sleeves in a month than a boardroom sees in a year.
Read the Martindale figure
It is published per collection: use it to separate daily-use posts from occasional ones.
Decide how it gets cleaned
Wipe-clean surfaces belong where food, ink and shared use are expected.
Ask the fire question early
Class 1IM is available on request with a specific fabric — it changes the shortlist.
