Every US spec writer knows the pain of a patchwork floor: twenty finishes, twenty lines in the schedule, twenty chances for a substitution. Azulej solves it with one move — the combination is a single reference whose 27-piece box (11.6 sq ft) already contains all 27 patterns, balanced by Mutina for random laying. One line in the schedule, endless walls on site. Patricia Urquiola designed the collection in 2012; Wallpaper* and the Interior Innovation Award premiated it within two years.

The material is rectified glazed porcelain, 8×8 inches, decorated with cold digital printing over four texture layers — unsaturated, slightly worn colours fixed in a deliberately irregular way, so the industrial tile keeps a handmade face. Three base colours (Bianco, Grigio, Nero), nine single patterns per colour for controlled layouts — Gira, Estrela, Trama, Prata, Trevo, Renda, Flores, Cubo, Diagonal — and a dedicated skirting.

The numbers behind the decoration

Declared data: water absorption 0.04%, stain resistance class 5, Mohs hardness 6, frost resistance, DCOF 0.62 against the 0.42 threshold — floor and wall, indoor and outdoor. In a workplace it dresses executive washrooms, reception fronts, coffee points and covered terraces without changing supplier or reference logic. Certificates download from this page; LEED recycled content is declared per colour.

FAQ

How does the one-SKU combination actually work at order and on site?
The combination is its own reference: each 27-piece box (11.6 sq ft) contains all 27 patterns in one color family, pre-balanced by Mutina. The crew lays alternating from several boxes and the randomness takes care of itself - no cut sheets per pattern, no substitution risk on eighteen line items. For controlled layouts you switch logic: nine single patterns per color, orderable individually.
Does DCOF 0.62 cover a commercial restroom floor?
The declared 0.62 sits comfortably above the 0.42 reference threshold for level interior floors that may get wet, alongside stain class 5 and 0.04% absorption. The European slip rating is R9, so for ramps or areas needing a higher class, the designer decides with the datasheet - downloadable from this page - rather than with the brochure.
Will the digital print hold up under commercial cleaning?
The graphics live under a glaze declared class 5 for stains and resistant to chemical attack, with Mohs 6 surface hardness. Routine care is neutral detergent in water; the manufacturer excludes acids, alkalis, waxes and steel wool, and recommends an entrance mat because grit - not chemistry - is what abrades any floor over time.
Can the same tile run outside to a terrace in a freeze climate?
Yes by declaration: floor and wall, indoor and outdoor, frost resistance per ISO 10545/12 and ASTM C1026, thermal shock per ISO 10545/9 and ASTM C484, at 0.04% absorption. Projects in northern states can carry the washroom patchwork onto the covered terrace with the same reference logic.
What sustainability documentation supports a LEED submittal?
Recycled content is declared per color under LEED 4.1 - 8.6% for Bianco, 15.8% for Grigio and Nero - with ISO 14001 environmental management and EPD, HPD, VOC emission data and Declaration of Contents available on request through La Mercanti. One line in the schedule, one memorable wall on site

Five moves for US architects and facility teams specifying Azulej across washrooms, reception fronts and terraces - with procurement kept simple.

Choose where the patchwork earns its keep
One combination wall per zone beats five. Executive washroom, reception front or coffee point - let plain Bianco, Grigio or Nero field tiles carry the rest.
Write it as two references, not twenty
Combination for the random mix, single patterns for controlled geometry. Everything else - field tiles, 4.7x20 skirting - stays in the same collection.
Put the declared data in the spec
Absorption 0.04%, stain class 5, Mohs 6, DCOF 0.62, frost resistant: manufacturer values from the datasheet on this page.
Mock up from several boxes
Random works when boxes alternate - exactly as the manufacturer instructs. Approve a dry-lay mockup before adhesive. Sample costs are fully credited at order confirmation.
Bundle logistics with the laying scheme
2 mm joints on spacer wedges, grout grey 76 or black 74, boxes staged per wall: La Mercanti consolidates quantities, documents and delivery with your GC.
