American projects love authenticity and distrust it in equal measure — too many «hand-crafted» labels on factory goods. Bas-Relief settles the question with a datasheet: production declared artisanal, porcelain clays extruded and cut by hand, tolerance ±2 mm printed in the specs, tonal variation listed as an intrinsic quality — and each piece shipped under a peel-off silicone film to protect the carving through grouting. The craft is not a story; it is documented process.

Patricia Urquiola designed the collection for Mutina in 2010, deepening the relief research she began with Déchirer — «more austere, less romantic», in her words. Four carved textures in three neutral tones (Bianco, Cipria, Nero): Code, a cipher-like repetition; Patchwork, overlapping reliefs that never repeat; Garland, a digitally redrawn floral; Cloud, air bubbles fixed into abstraction. Unglazed — the colour is the clay itself — with the relief cut at different depths so raking light does the decorating.

Specs behind the craft

Walls indoors and out for the 18×54 (7×21 in) textures; Code (26.5×18 cm) is also declared for floors, with DCOF 0.56 against the 0.42 threshold and R11. Absorption 0.07%, stain class 5, frost proof — manufacturer data; HPD and VOC documentation available. Datasheet downloads from this page.

FAQ

How is «hand-made» verified here, beyond marketing?
In the technical sheet, which is unusual: production is declared artisanal, the clays are extruded and each tile is cut by hand, the tolerance is printed as plus or minus 2 mm, and tonal variation is listed as an intrinsic quality of the product. Even the packing tells the story - every piece wears a removable silicone film so grout cannot fill the carving. When craft claims are documented at this level, the submittal writes itself.
Does DCOF 0.56 qualify the Code floor tile for commercial restrooms?
The declared 0.56 clears the 0.42 reference threshold for level interior floors that may get wet, alongside R11, stain class 5 and 0.07% absorption. Note the division of labor: only Code (26.5x18) is declared for floors - Patchwork, Garland and Cloud are wall claddings, their deeper relief is not a walking surface. Room-by-room judgment stays with the designer, datasheet in hand from this page.
Unglazed porcelain in a high-traffic building - smart or risky?
Smart, by the numbers: with no glaze layer, the color runs through the body, so wear cannot expose a different shade - and the declared deep-abrasion value is 274.4 mm3 against a 275 limit, with stain class 5 and chemical resistance. Care is neutral detergent only; the manufacturer bans acids, alkalis, waxes and steel wool, and recommends entry mats since grit is the one real abrasive.
What should the GC know before installation day?
Four things from the datasheet: use a slow-setting porcelain adhesive so setters can adjust hand-cut pieces; hold a 2 mm joint on spacer wedges to absorb the declared tolerance; mix tiles from several boxes so intentional shade variation spreads; and leave the silicone film on until grouting is done, then peel and sponge. Plan it as finish carpentry, not commodity tiling.
Can it run outdoors - a covered entry, a courtyard wall in a freeze climate?
Yes by declaration: indoor and outdoor wall use for all four textures, frost resistance to ISO 10545/12 and ASTM C1026, thermal shock to ISO 10545/9, absorption 0.07%. HPD and VOC documentation is available through La Mercanti for wellness-oriented submittals, and sample costs are fully credited at order confirmation.

Bringing documented craft into a US fit-out

Five moves for architects and owners specifying Urquiola's carved porcelain across washrooms, receptions and courtyards - craft planned like construction.

Pick the wall that earns the carving
One sculpted surface per zone: executive washroom, reception front or boardroom accent. Flat light kills relief - check the light angle first.
Split the system by format
Code 26.5x18 for floors and calm planes, the 18x54 textures for feature walls. Three tones - Bianco, Cipria, Nero - keep the palette tight.
Spec the declared numbers
Absorption 0.07%, stain class 5, abrasion 274.4 mm3, DCOF 0.56 for Code floors, frost proof - manufacturer data from the datasheet on this page.
Write the install sequence into the bid
Slow-set adhesive, 2 mm joints on wedges, mixed boxes, silicone film peeled after grout: name it in the scope so no bidder prices it as commodity tile.
Close quantities with the box math
Walls: 10 pcs per box (10.4 sq ft). Floors: 20 pcs per box. La Mercanti runs quantities, attic stock and freight with your GC.
