Count how many times a front-desk person gets up in an hour — a courier, a visitor badge, a package handover — and the irony writes itself: reception, of all workstations, is the one whose desk never learned to move. Funny Sat by IVM Office, designed by Stefano Bigi, fixes that: its LINAK motorised column moves the top from 75 to 115 cm with soft start and stop, a recessed two-button control, and a standby draw of 0.1 W. Greet standing, work seated, hand over a package at counter height — one desk, every posture.

The public side is a hemispherical panel of thermoformed, sound-absorbing 100% PET — two layers of Trevira CS fabric around a fibre core — in green, orange or sand. The working side carries a cement-effect FSC-certified top, a lockable swivel drawer and a suspended CPU holder. All of it in 65 inches of frontage, on a design registered with the EUIPO in 2017. In the front-of-house projects La Mercanti ships stateside, the counter is usually the piece everyone photographs and nobody specifies properly; this one gives the spec sheet as much character as the curve.

Who is behind the Funny Sat design?
Stefano Bigi, credited by name on the IVM catalogue — and the shape itself is protected: EU registered design no. 003659648-0001, filed on January 19, 2017 by IVM S.p.A. of Lissone. In a market of anonymous counters, this one has both an author and a registration number.
How does a flat panel become a hemisphere?
The panel is thermoformed flat, so the fabric never creases or bubbles. A pattern of triangular compressions — 260 mm at 9 degrees near the top, 560 mm at 5 degrees near the base — puts pairs of male and female triangles over each other; align their holes, lock them with two metal plates, and the flat sheet pulls itself into a curve.
How much power does the height mechanism use?
Almost none when idle: the LINAK control box draws 0.1 W in standby, with electronic overload protection and a soft start/stop that moves the top smoothly instead of jolting it. The inner telescopic column is anodised aluminum; the power cable is interchangeable.
What is the fabric on the front panel?
A 100% FR polyester — Trevira CS — at 470 grams per linear metre, on both faces of a 12 mm polyester fiber core. The whole sandwich is single-material PET and carries an Italian Class 1 fire-resistance rating, the figure that matters when a piece stands in a building's entrance.
What footprint should we plan for?
About 65 by 34 inches — 164 cm of frontage, 85 cm deep — with the top at 110 cm and 115 cm over the welcome shelf. It is freestanding furniture, not millwork: no contractor, no demolition when the office moves, and the counter moves with you.

Running one front desk across three shifts

A sequence for offices where the reception counter is shared: how Funny Sat keeps every operator comfortable without a single adjustment argument.

Map who actually staffs the desk
List the people who cover reception in a week — the full-timer, the lunch cover, the evening security shift. If that list is longer than one name, a fixed-height counter is a compromise for everyone on it.
Set the two working heights
Have the most frequent seated user find their height with the recessed buttons, then the tallest standing user theirs. The column travels from 75 to 115 cm, so both postures live inside its range with room to spare.
Make the handover a habit
Shift change takes one gesture: press and hold until the top reaches your height. The soft start/stop means the monitor and phone ride along without a shake — nothing to remove, nothing to re-park.
Assign the lock, not the drawer
The swivel drawer locks with a single key: decide which role holds it per shift — badges and petty cash change hands with the key, not with a note taped to the counter.
Keep the machine off the floor
Mount the computer on the suspended holder — Slim up to 12 kg, Big up to 15 — so the night cleaner mops a clear floor and no shift ever kicks a cable loose. The desk stays serviceable from the working side only.
