The executive pages of the Lay catalog do something American corner offices rarely dare: they put the boss at a blue desk. The 12 mm CDF top is blue, the die-cast aluminum joint and the oval steel legs are painted to match, the 82.7-inch side cabinet is lacquered blue and anthracite, and the bookcases behind repeat blue open compartments under anthracite doors. One color, from the floor up, in a room that usually asks for walnut. The walnut version exists too, with an anthracite frame; the point is that the choice is yours.

Whichever designer desk you pick, the structure is the same U-shaped die-cast aluminum joint where two diagonal legs meet, offered in white, red, blue, green or anthracite. Tops come in 18 mm melamine, 12 mm CDF or, on the executive desk, Canaletto walnut veneer. The concept and creative direction are by Margherita Rui, the product design by e-ggs. The same frame carries the manager’s desk resting on a storage unit, the staff desk and bench for two to six, and the meeting tables in soft, rectangular, high and round versions.

La Mercanti puts the blue and the walnut executive compositions of Lay side by side on your floor plan, checks clearances in inches, and ships to the United States with the cabinet hung on the side you specify.

FAQ

How does the Lay top slide open?
With the optional sliding-top kit: the top pulls forward by hand and a spring pin locks it in one of five positions, no tools needed, so the cable tray underneath can be inspected. The kit covers a single desk and is not offered on benches mounted on a spine.
What are the three bases of the Lay storage?
A staff bench that takes desks on both sides, a low support bench that carries the executive side cabinet, and a bookcase on feet. The staff bench and the bookcase on feet build the spines that divide an open floor.
What credenzas go behind the Lay executive desk?
Two: a low credenza with a niche and one with two drawers, both 78.7 in wide, 19.7 in deep and 29.5 in high, lacquered or in Canaletto walnut, placed behind the desk as a second working surface.
Who designed Lay?
The concept, creative direction and design direction are by Margherita Rui with the studio dogtrot; the product design is by e-ggs. Archiutti credits both on the collection catalog.
What section are the Lay legs?
Oval, 2 by 1 inch tubular steel, powder coated in the same color as the joint; each leg ends in an ABS foot with 0.2 in of travel to level the desk on an uneven floor.

How to write Lay into a spec sheet

Five lines a specification of Lay should carry so the quote matches the architect’s drawing.

Open with the top material
State for Lay whether the top is 18 mm melamine, 12 mm CDF or walnut veneer, and the finish: the choice sets the edge too.
Set one frame finish
Joint, legs and duct of Lay take the same coating: white, red, blue, green or anthracite. Write it once for the whole floor.
List width and depth per desk
For each Lay desk give the width in inches, the depth of 31.5 or 23.6 in, and whether adjustable legs are required.
Detail the storage modules
Give width, open or with door, niche depth and finishing top; Lay is ordered from the bottom module up.
Close with power and cabling
State the number of top accesses, the position of the cable tray and any sliding-top kit; La Mercanti checks it against the electrical plan.
