Most sculpted wall tiles surrender at the first curve. Rombini does not: its slender battens are pressed one by one in a 3D mould, then assembled on mesh sheets, and the datasheet states plainly that the system suits concave and convex surfaces. A round lobby column, a curved core wall, the swept back of a reception desk wall — Mutina clads them without mitred tricks or filler panels.

The profile comes from Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, who turned the rhombus into a three-dimensional rib in three scales: Extra Small at 16 mm thick, Small and Large at 22. Ten colorways — five matt, three gloss, two crackle — plus Terminal trims and a glazed-edge Listello so the cladding ends as deliberately as it starts. Archiproducts Design Award, 2016.

The numbers behind the sculpture are office-grade: stain resistance in class 5 under ISO 10545, two classes above requirement, and a LEED v4.1 declaration of 64% recycled material. Through La Mercanti, sample batches arrive before the commitment — their cost fully credited on order confirmation.

FAQ

What lets Rombini follow a curved wall?
The format: single battens pressed in a 3D mould and assembled on flexible mesh sheets. The sheet bends, the battens stay straight, and the datasheet lists concave and convex surfaces among the intended uses. Minimum radius depends on profile and design — confirm it on the manufacturer's documentation, project by project.
Is Rombini a wall tile only, or can it go on floors?
Walls only, indoors — that is the declared destination and the honest answer. The triangular relief is made to catch light, not foot traffic. For floors, Mutina's catalogue covers the ground with other collections by the same designers, Pico first among them.
How much material does one square meter take?
Seventeen pieces per square meter for Small and Large, 17.4 for Extra Small, delivered as pre-assembled sheets of about half a square meter per box. Estimating stays simple: count sheets, add Terminal and Listello trims from the drawing, order from one batch.
Does Rombini help with LEED credits?
It carries a LEED v4.1 declaration of 64% recycled material — a high figure for a glazed collection — plus VOC, HPD, SDS and BPD3 documentation on request. For sustainability submittals, the paperwork is already structured the way consultants ask for it.
Which adhesive and grout does the datasheet call for?
A non-rapid-drying adhesive, so the sheets can be aligned properly; joints equal to those inside the sheet; cement-based or epoxy grout worked half a square meter at a time — except on the Vert and Brun crackle glazes, where epoxy is excluded and cementitious grout is the rule.

Cladding a curved lobby wall in Rombini

Five moves that take a column or a swept wall from concept to clean execution with Mutina's mesh-mounted relief.

Map every radius on the plan
List the curved elements first — columns, cores, desk backdrops — and note their radii. Tight curves favor the Extra Small profile; generous sweeps carry Small and Large comfortably.
Mock up the curve with one box
Half a square meter of mesh sheets wraps a test section of pipe or column. Judge the joint rhythm and shadow on the actual curve before committing the order; sample costs are fully credited at order confirmation.
Set the seam where eyes are not
On a column the sheets meet somewhere: plan that seam toward the least-viewed side and keep joints identical to the in-sheet spacing so the batten rhythm never stutters.
Plan the top and bottom stops
A curved run still needs to end: Terminal pieces close the horizontal edges, the glazed-edge Listello handles verticals. Fix these on the shop drawing, not on site.
Stage the install like a sheet job
Dry, even substrate, non-rapid adhesive, sheets pressed and aligned before the adhesive grabs, grout in small areas washed promptly. On curves, patience during setting is the whole craft.
