Precision matters with awards. In 2008 Della Rovere launched two desks by Karim Rashid, Zero and Uno, and the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design gave its GOOD DESIGN Award 2008, Furniture category, to Uno. Zero is the other half of that designer pair: same designer, same year, same collaboration — and a different shape.

Where Uno was described by the maker as curve and prestige, Zero was presented as imagination and dynamism: a single self-supporting shell in glass-fibre reinforced resin, 210 by 90 centimetres, lacquered gloss or embossed matt in nine shades, Cloud white first. The two names are a stated tribute to binary code, to pairing what looks opposite. La Mercanti brings the pair to American executive floors with the credits in the right order.

FAQ

Did Zero win the Good Design Award?
No, and the credit is worth getting right: the Chicago Athenaeum awarded GOOD DESIGN 2008 in the Furniture category to Uno, the twin project. Zero shares the designer, the year and the collaboration, not the award.
Why were two desks launched together?
The manufacturer presents Zero and Uno as a tribute to binary code and to complementarity — pairing what looks opposite but shares one nature. The names are the argument.
How does Zero differ from its twin?
The maker describes Uno as curve and prestige, with ergonomics and soft forms, and Zero as imagination and dynamism. They were conceived as a pair, not as two sizes of the same product.
Is Karim Rashid credited on the datasheet?
Yes, the technical sheet names him directly, with the year. For a designer desk that attribution is part of the specification, not marketing copy.
What is the desk made of?
A self-supporting shell in thermosetting resin reinforced with glass fibre, lacquered gloss or embossed matt, in nine catalogue shades plus custom colours on request.

How to quote a designer piece without misplacing the credit

Five checks that keep an A&D submission accurate on names, dates and awards.

Name the designer and the year
Karim Rashid, 2008. Both appear on the manufacturer's sheet and both belong in the submission.
Attribute the award to the right piece
GOOD DESIGN 2008 went to Uno. Zero is the twin project, and saying so is more persuasive than blurring it.
Quote the material precisely
Self-supporting shell in glass-fibre reinforced thermosetting resin, not moulded plastic.
List the finish route
Gloss or embossed matt, nine catalogue shades, custom by RAL or NCS, plus the customisable image option.
Keep one size in the drawing
210 by 90 by 75 centimetres. La Mercanti supplies the manufacturer's drawings with the specification.
