Bespoke: size, colour, finish

Decorated walls usually lose the argument in the submittal package, not in the design review. Paper41 arrives with the classification already on the sheet: 41zero42 declares A2-s1, d0 for the Pro and Up series and A1 for Lux, tested to UNI EN 13501-1:2019, the European reaction-to-fire standard. Alongside it sit ASTM numbers a US reviewer reads without translation – water absorption to ASTM C373, thermal shock to C484, stain resistance to C1378, bond resistance above 50 PSI to C482. The graphic on the wall is the same one a wallpaper supplier would show; the paperwork underneath is ceramic.

Three series cover three rooms. Pro is 20"×40" at 0.14 in. on a fibreglass-backed body, matt, thirteen patterns deep; Up keeps that build and adds a relief face that picks up grazing light in a corridor; Lux steps up to 24"×48" at 0.24 in., glossy, with A, B and C graphics packed in together, so a long elevation never falls into a visible beat. All three are for vertical surfaces: 41zero42 excludes floors and pool walls outright, and keeps Lux indoors. On a US job the material has to clear three desks – design, fire review, facilities – and it clears them on the manufacturer's own figures rather than on a promise. La Mercanti ships it with those figures attached.

ISO values: water absorption 0.3% (ISO 10545/3); stain resistance class 3 (ISO 10545/14); thermal shock resistant (ISO 10545/9, Pro and Up); no visible color alteration on exposure to light (DIN 51094, Pro and Up); modulus of rupture 45 N/mm² on Lux (ISO 10545/4, required ≥35); dimensional tolerances to ISO 10545/2
Declared applications: hotels, restaurants, offices, shop windows, showers, kitchen backsplash, sauna and steam rooms; exterior wall cladding on Pro and Up
Declared exclusions: floors and swimming pool walls on all three series; exterior use on Lux
Clearance from flames: 8 in. (20 cm) minimum from the installed product
Packing, Pro and Up: 2 slabs per box, 10.8 sq ft, 17.6 lb; 30 boxes per pallet, 323 sq ft, 529 lb
Packing, Lux: 3 slabs per box, 23.3 sq ft, 75 lb; 18 boxes per pallet, 418 sq ft, 1,349 lb
Installation: 0.04 in. (1 mm) joint, no leveling spacers, start at least 0.16 in. (4 mm) above finished floor, cementitious grout and plastic trowels only; neutral silicone at trays and frames, never acetic
Grout color per pattern: Kerakoll KK 2 on Zoe, Azzurra, Marcela, Musa, Olivia, Midori, Gae, Cristoforo and Franz; KK 12 on Flora, Jane, Diana and Lars; KK 30 on Jacques; KK 50 on Gianni; KK 4 on Louis; Mapei 137 Caribbean on Luz; Mapei 150 Yellow on Carla
Cutting: porcelain tooling, single score from the face, no waterjet; openings with an angle grinder and diamond bits; cut edge finished with an abrasive sponge
41zero42 note: the decorating process raises image definition and color rendering but lowers surface abrasion resistance against traditional porcelain, which is why every series is declared for wall cladding only

FAQ

What fire classification does Paper41 carry?
41zero42 declares A2-s1, d0 for the Pro and Up series and A1 for Lux, tested to UNI EN 13501-1:2019. A1 is the top band of that standard; s1 and d0 describe smoke production and flaming droplets.
Which ASTM references does the manufacturer publish?
ASTM C373 for water absorption, C484 for thermal shock, C1378 for stain resistance in class 3, C372 for linear thermal expansion at 4.4×10-6 °F-1 and C482 for bond resistance, compliant above 50 PSI.
What sizes ship to a US project?
Pro and Up are 20"×40" at 0.14 in.; Lux is 24"×48" at 0.24 in. A Pro box covers 10.8 sq ft at 17.6 lb, a Lux box 23.3 sq ft at 75 lb, which keeps handling on site within one person's reach.
Can Paper41 go on a restroom floor?
No. Abrasion resistance is lower than traditional porcelain by design, so the whole family is declared for walls. Specify a floor porcelain for the horizontal plane and let Paper41 carry the vertical.
Does the pattern repeat along a long wall?
Less than you would expect on Lux: every box holds three different graphics, A, B and C. On a corridor elevation that breaks the rhythm without anyone having to order four separate patterns.

How to specify and install Paper41 by 41zero42

Five steps from series selection to grout schedule, using the classifications and installation rules 41zero42 publishes for the collection.

Pick the series against the room
Pro and Up give 20"×40" at 0.14 in. and an A2-s1, d0 rating; Lux gives 24"×48" at 0.24 in. and A1. Corridors and lobbies usually want the larger slab and the higher class; bathrooms and backsplashes are Pro and Up territory.
Check how the material arrives
A Pro or Up box holds two slabs at 17.6 lb; a Lux box three slabs at 75 lb. Keep the pallets under cover with the protective caps on, and stop slabs from rubbing against each other or the bench.
Draw the elevation, then the joints
Paper41 patterns run on across slabs at a 1 mm joint. Set the boxes out on the floor first and lock the sequence; on Lux, decide where each of the three graphics lands before the first slab goes up.
Write the exclusions into the notes
No floors, no pool walls, no exterior for Lux, and 8 in. of clearance from any burner. Stating them on the drawing keeps a value-engineering round from moving the material somewhere it was never declared for.
Schedule the grout by pattern name
Each Paper41 pattern has a grout color named by 41zero42 — Kerakoll KK 2, KK 12, KK 30, KK 50, KK 4, Mapei 137 Caribbean, Mapei 150 Yellow. Cementitious only, plastic trowels, neutral silicone at the wet edges.
