Emeco's own word for the Navy is unimproved. The chair the US Navy commissioned in 1944 for its ships and submarines, built to mil-spec and tested to last 150 years, has never had a redesign, a facelift or a second edition. The same 77-step process, the same factory at 805 West Elm Avenue in Hanover, Pennsylvania, the same soft aluminum tube heat-treated to T6 after the welds are ground flush. Plenty of design classics from that decade come back as reissues; this one never left.

That is a useful thing to know when you specify it. A Navy ordered this year matches one bought decades ago, so a dining room can grow a few chairs at a time without a visible seam, and a hotel can replace a single piece in a row of thirty. The chair is 15.5 in wide and 19.5 in deep, 34 in high with an 18 in seat, and weighs 7 lb; the series adds the armchair at 20.75 in, the counter stool with a 24 in seat, the barstool at 30 in, arms optional on both stools, plus the children's Mini, all in hand-brushed anodized or hand-polished aluminum. La Mercanti keeps it alongside its Italian collections for the projects that ask for it, and specifies it exactly as Emeco has since 1944, which is to say unchanged.

FAQ

How much wider is the Navy Armchair than the chair?
The armchair is 20.75 in wide against 15.5 in for the chair, with the same 19.5 in depth and 18 in seat height; the arms sit at 27.5 in and the piece weighs 8.5 lb, a pound and a half more. At a table it buys elbow room, not seat width: the seat pan is the same 15.5 in.
Does the Navy come in black?
Emeco's 2025 brochure lists a black powder-coat finish for the 1006 chairs and stools alongside the hand-brushed and hand-polished ones; like the brushed finish, it is approved for outdoor use. Name it when you request the quote so the line is written correctly.
Can it be cleaned with bleach in a healthcare setting?
Yes. Emeco states that its anodized hand-brushed finish is bleach cleanable and can be power washed, and describes aluminum as non-bacterial, which is why the Navy is specified in clinics and high-traffic dining rooms. Wipe, let the diluted bleach act briefly, rinse.
Does it need assembly?
No. Every Navy ships fully assembled, one chair per carton of 22 × 20 × 37 in weighing 14 lb, or two per carton at 26 × 18 × 40 in and 21 lb. There is no hardware in the chair at all, so there is nothing to tighten on arrival.
Will it hold up in salt air?
Emeco approves the hand-brushed Navy for marine applications, a corrosion standard above ordinary outdoor use: the anodized layer is grown from the metal itself, and the alloy was chosen in 1944 for ships. Care after a season on a waterfront terrace is a rinse and a wipe.

How to file the Navy Chair in a LEED or WELL submission

The five documents Emeco publishes for the Navy 1006 and where each one lands in a green-building checklist.

Start with the HPD
Download the Health Product Declaration for the Navy, disclosed to 1,000 ppm: it feeds the Material Ingredients credit under LEED Materials and Resources and Feature X07 in WELL v2.
Add the carbon figure
File the verified footprint of 14.88 kg CO2e per chair, broken down into materials, packaging, energy and transport, against WELL Feature I06 Carbon Disclosure.
Attach the BIFMA test report
The Intertek report on ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017 lists seven conforming tests; the VOC sections of ANSI/BIFMA e3-2019 cover Low-Emitting Materials under Indoor Environmental Quality.
Note the recycled content
Write 80% recycled aluminum, half post-consumer and half post-industrial, for Sourcing of Raw Materials, and 100% recyclable packaging for Construction and Demolition Waste.
Keep the origin on record
The country of origin is printed on every carton; La Mercanti hands over the cut sheet with the order so the file is complete before the chairs arrive.
