Desk legs are usually engineering. On Royal, a contemporary desk, one of them is upholstery. The panel is poplar plywood curved in a mould, then slightly padded and covered in diamond-quilted leather — the same craft that goes into a chair, applied to the part of a desk nobody thinks about. Run a hand along it and the surface gives, very slightly. That is what a luxury executive desk is for.

The alternative is the same panel unpadded, wrapped in saddle leather, taut and matte. Both versions sit on a steel profile finished in champagne, the tone that returns on handles and cabinet bases. Tops are 6 cm deep in 240, 260 and 280 cm widths, in veneer or saddle leather, and the desk can be built around two legs or one. Umberto Asnago drew the collection in 2025; La Mercanti handles US executive projects end to end, from finish samples to the installed room.

FAQ

Why would a desk leg be padded?
Because the collection treats it as a surface people touch, not as structure to hide. The plywood panel is curved in a mould, given a light padding, then covered in quilted leather, which softens the reflection and gives the leg the depth you normally see on seating. The unpadded saddle leather version is there for anyone who wants the opposite: flat, taut, matte.
What is the difference between diamond and vertical rod quilting?
Both are stitched patterns on leather. Diamond breaks the surface into facets and catches light from several directions; vertical rod runs the eye up and down the panel and makes the volume look narrower. Neither can be done on saddle leather, which takes stitching instead.
Will the leather leg hold up in a working office?
It is specified for executive rooms and takes normal contact from chairs and shoes at the base, where the champagne steel profile protects the panel. As with any leather, care instructions from the manufacturer apply, and heavy traffic areas are worth discussing before the finish is locked.
Does the padded version cost the room any legroom?
The padding is slight, and the working dimensions come from the top: 120 cm deep, 75 cm high. What actually changes the clearance is choosing the one-leg configuration, where a pedestal or the sideboard carries one end of the top.
Can finishes be seen before committing?
Yes. Veneer, saddle leather and leather samples are sent ahead of any order, and the drawings for each element are downloadable from the product page. Lead times are confirmed in writing at order confirmation.

How to choose the leg finish on a Royal desk

The leg is the first thing a visitor reads. Five steps to get it right before anything else is ordered.

Decide padded or taut
Quilted leather over light padding reads warm and tactile; saddle leather stretched over the bare panel reads sharp. This single choice sets the temperature of the whole room.
Test the pattern in the room's light
Diamond quilting facets the surface, vertical rod stretches it. Both behave differently under downlights than in daylight, so judge the sample where the desk will actually stand.
Match or contrast with the top
Tops come in veneer or saddle leather. Keeping leg and top in the same family is the quiet route; contrasting them makes the leg the subject.
Check the floor line
The leg ends in a champagne steel profile. Against a dark floor it draws a bright edge; against a pale one it disappears. Look at the two together before deciding.
Order samples, then the desk
La Mercanti sends leather and veneer samples for approval, and the sample cost is entirely credited against the order when it goes ahead.
