In 2015, at the Educational Spaces Innovation Awards in New Orleans, the ST12 study bench system by Lamm was named Best of Competition. It is an American honor for an Italian product designed by Orlandini Design, and it went to the ST12-13 version fitted with the HL³ seat.

The catalog records the award, not the jury's reasoning, so the honest way to read it is to look at what the system is. A single central structure in tubular steel carries a fixed writing table, 15.7 in front to back, plus two movable seats on pivoting die-cast aluminum arms, which places it among university and classroom furniture built for the long haul. The seats swivel through 360° with a calibrated automatic return, and Lamm notes that this lets students in different rows work at the same table, the same job usually given to collaborative furniture.

The HL³ seat has a record of its own. Lucci and Orlandini's design received Good Design 2010 from the Chicago Athenaeum and a Silver Award at The Best of NeoCon 2010, in the multi-purpose seats category. The other version, ST13, pairs the same bench with the New Modulamm seat. Benches go in pairs of seats, run straight or on a curve, and sit on level floors, ramped floors or risers; facing benches can also form an island used from both sides.

For a US campus that weighs design recognition when it selects furniture, that is a record earned on American ground twice over: once by the system, once by its seat.

When it is the right choice

  • Halls that go from a lecture to team exercises within the same class period.
  • A brief that keeps the table fixed and lets the seat turn.
  • Wood or padded shells, picked room by room, on either HL³ or New Modulamm.

When another solution fits better

  • When a hall must fit every possible seat on one unbroken run of folding seats, choose Lamm's E5000, with spacing from 20 in.

FAQ

What is the ST12-13 writing table made of?

HPL double-laminate particleboard, 1.06 in thick and 15.7 in from front to back, edged in ABS of the same color. It comes in eight finishes: black, white, tele-gray, graphite, eucalyptus, oak, gray oak and beech. Lamm specifies its wood components as low formaldehyde emission.

Does ST12-13 need a tiered floor?

No. According to Lamm, it goes on flat floors, on sloped floors and on steps alike. Where the rows are not anchored to the floor, an inter-row bar is available as an accessory for that kind of installation.

What brings a swiveled seat back into place?

Each seat turns on a 360° rotation device with a calibrated automatic return, so it comes back without being pushed. The arm that carries it has its own movement: a rotation with automatic spring return over a 64° stroke.

How high are the writing table and the seat?

Writing-table height is 29.5 in on both versions, and seat height is 17.3 in with the seat at rest. The front panel, an accessory in extruded aluminum, is 8.3 in high.

How much floor depth does each row take?

With ST12 the bench plus seat needs 23.6 in front to back and the rows are pitched at 37.4 in. With ST13 the figures are 26 in and 39.4 in. That difference, set by the seat, is what changes the number of rows a hall can hold.

Turning an ST12-13 row into a group-work island

Lamm describes the 360° swivel as what lets people in different rows work at the same table. Here is how to set that up during a class.

Pick the rows that will team up

On ST12-13 the shared table is the fixed writing table between two rows. Start by deciding which pairs of rows will work together, so every group has one table in common.

Swivel the front row around

Each seat turns through 360°. Students in the first row of each pair rotate toward the row behind them and face the same writing table as their neighbors.

Use the fixed table as the work surface

The HPL writing table measures 15.7 in from front to back and does not fold, so it holds laptops, papers and drawings for the whole group while both rows work at it.

Plan power where groups will gather

If groups need to charge devices, the electrification system with sockets accessible on the table is the one to specify for those rows; sockets are an option you request.

Let the room reset at the end

When students stand up, the calibrated return brings each seat back and the support arm returns by spring after its 64° stroke. The rows are ready for a lecture again.
