Look at the 5015 from the side and the headrest is not a part screwed on above the back: it is the back itself, folded over and padded, hugging the top of the backrest with what Ares Line calls a clever trick of the upholstery. The line of the chair stays whole from seat to crown, 48 7/8 to 53 7/8 in measured up to the crown, and reads as one piece among the Italian executive chairs we put behind a desk. A bolt-on headrest changes a silhouette; this one finishes it.

Everything below earns that top. Seat and back are beech plywood padded with self-extinguishing polyurethane; the back carries the stitched seams Ares Line lists among its strengths. A gas lift moves the seat from 17 3/4 to 22 7/8 in, and the arms come closed, in upholstered birch plywood on a steel support, or open in three versions under a soft touch elastomer cover. Design BaccoliniDesign.

Take the headrest away and you have the 5045, low back on casters for the second desk; fix the height at 33 1/2 in on four polished-aluminum spokes with nylon feet and you have the 5045R, which the Ares Line catalog photographs around a meeting table and which sits as well facing the director, among the conference room seating, or, if the client wishes, in a reception area meant to impress. Along a conference bench, the floor-mounted T&T version returns to its resting position automatically. La Mercanti sends the 5015 drawing with the headrest height marked against the desk, ahead of the purchase order.

FAQ

By how much does the gas lift raise a Parlament seat?

By 5 1/8 in: the seat of the 5015 and of the 5045 travels from 17 3/4 to 22 7/8 in off the floor on the gas cylinder Ares Line fits under it, and the overall height of the chair rises with it. The 5045R has no lift at all; its seat stays fixed, 17 3/4 in up, on the four-spoke base. For a desk shared by two people over the day, the range on the rolling models covers both without either of them touching anything but one lever.

Shipping Parlament: what volume does one chair take in the truck?

Ares Line declares 12.0 cu ft for the 5015 and 8.8 cu ft for the 5045 and the 5045R, each figure covering the two versions the manufacturer draws of every model. The high back is what adds the space, not the base, so a shipment of low-back chairs packs tighter than the same count with the tall one. Whoever books the freight from Italy counts model by model and does not average: the two low models carry one figure, the high one its own.

Nylon or polished aluminum: what changes under a Parlament on five spokes?

Only the material of the star. Ares Line builds the five-spoke base of the 5015 and the 5045 in nylon or in polished aluminum, and either one takes self-braking swivel casters or fixed glides. The choice is cosmetic and tactile, not structural: the chair above it keeps the same gas lift, the same mechanism and the same seat. On a floor plan, nylon disappears under the desk and aluminum catches the light, which is usually the whole argument for one or the other.

Why would anyone order the closed arm on Parlament?

Because Ares Line offers it for one stated reason: an especially elegant silhouette. The closed arm is a panel of birch plywood, upholstered like the chair and fixed to a steel support, so the side of the chair becomes one continuous surface from the seat up instead of an open loop. It weighs on the look more than on the hand, and the open versions keep the soft touch elastomer where the forearm rests; the closed one is chosen by whoever will see the chair more often than sit in it.

Where do the classic lines of Parlament actually come from?

From the way Ares Line describes the chair: classic lines first, then an unusually careful upholstery, then a large and cosy seat. None of that is a style label added by a reseller; it is the manufacturer's own order of priorities, and it explains the choices on the sheet, the stitched seams on the back, the closed arm, the upholstered fold at the top of the 5015. A chair drawn this way goes into a corner office that will not be refurnished for a decade, and still looks like it was chosen on purpose.

Setting up a conference room with Parlament on the T&T floor-mounted system

Five facts from the Ares Line Collective Spaces catalog, in the order a planner needs them: the version, the floor fixing, the spacing, the movements and what happens when the room empties.

Start from the T&T version

The Parlament that goes on the T&T column is the upholstered chair with fixed arms, 23 5/8 in wide and 21 5/8 in deep, standing 51 1/8 to 53 1/8 in tall. Ares Line lists it in the Collective Spaces catalog beside Trendy First Class, with the note that the structure adapts to other chairs in the range; the order names this version, not the 5015 or the 5045.

A column fixed to the floor

T&T is a system fixed to the floor, and the chair sits on it instead of on a five-spoke base. Everything the seat does from then on comes from that column: the rotation, the travel, the height and the return. On the drawing, each place along the bench therefore becomes a fixed point, which is the first thing to settle with whoever lays the floor.

34 1/4 in between seats

The catalog states a minimum spacing of 34 1/4 in between adjacent seats. Measure the usable length of the conference bench and divide by that figure to know how many Parlament it takes; a bench that falls short of a whole multiple loses a seat rather than squeezing one in. The spacing is the manufacturer's minimum, not a recommendation to exceed.

Three movements, one chair

Once mounted, the chair rotates through 360°, slides forward and backward, and adjusts in height between 19 1/4 and 21 1/4 in. Ares Line describes the chairs so equipped as essentially mobile, usable around a conference table while staying in perfect alignment with each other, and that is the behaviour a delegate gets at every seat along the bench.

Empty room, straight row

Every movement returns automatically to the rest position when the seat is left. The Benghazi project page adds the consequence that matters to a safety officer: unoccupied chairs stay aligned and in place, and the escape routes between the bench and the wall remain clear. A conference room photographed empty looks the way it was drawn, without anyone pushing chairs back in.
