Every modular sofa promises to fit any space. Then the drawing meets the wall, and the composition is either a foot too long or a seat short of what the lobby actually needs. Arper builds a way out into the Shaal system: end modules come both as a 1-seater and as a 1.5-seater, left and right. That half step is the difference between a layout that works and one that gets value-engineered on site.
The rest of the system is straightforward: central modules, a 90° corner module, plus a freestanding two- and three-seater sofa, a daybed and an ottoman. Designed by Doshi Levien in 2022, Shaal is built around a wraparound panel of covered plywood that cradles the deep cushions and raises the form off the floor, with removable cushion covers and a bi-material option drawn from pairings the maker has already approved. It suits lounges and waiting areas, hospitality and restaurants, break rooms, collaborative floors and a home office. La Mercanti works from your plan, confirms finishes in writing and coordinates delivery and installation.

Construction: outer structure formed by a wraparound panel of covered plywood; deep inner cushions with removable covers.
Types: freestanding two- and three-seater sofa; modules for composition (left and right end module 1.5 seater, left and right end module 1 seater, central module, 90° corner module); freestanding daybed; ottoman.
Finishes: entirely upholstered in one material and one color, or bi-material in different colors, in specially designed combinations. Materials: fabric, leather, coated fabric or customer's own material. The ottoman is single-material only.
Declared bi-material pairings: Divina 3 with Vidar 4, Elmosoft with Vidar 4, Synergy with Main Line Flax, Valencia with Fabthirty, Pelle Fiore with Fiord 2.
Accessories: decorative cushions in two sizes, intended for the sofa.
Standard: EN 16139 — Furniture, strength, durability and safety, requirements for non-domestic seating. Level L1 general use; level L2 extreme use.
Care: vacuum fabrics on low suction, preferably weekly; blot non-greasy stains with a clean lint-free cloth and warm water, then soapy water or washing-up liquid if required, following the declared formulas. Coated fabrics with a microfiber cloth, no alcohol, solvents or abrasives. Keep leather out of direct sunlight and away from heat, blot spills immediately and work from the edges toward the center. Test any product on a hidden area and wait twenty-four hours.
End of life: separate upholstery and padding, structure and base by material type before disposal.
